This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a six-month break that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
